Keeping up to date with electrical product recalls
This article covers why should you stay up to date with product recall information.
According to the charity Electrical Safety First the average success rate of an electrical product recall in the UK is just 10-20%.
This figure is far too low which means there could be millions of unsafe electrical items in the home or even workplace. Large scale recalled electrical items or safety alerts are often circulated via mainstream media. Think back to mid-2016 when Hotpoint issued a statement about some of its appliances. The public had been made aware through news articles and shared on social media but what you don't know if the majority of faulty appliances are much smaller and less known.

Register Your Appliances
Unless products are registered, it is very difficult to track them down.
The ‘Register My Appliance’ website makes it easy for you to register all of your electrical products. You will need the brand name, model, serial number and purchase date and the registration process is very simple to follow. The manufacturer will only contact you in the event of a recall, your details will not be used for marketing. Go to www.registermyappliance.org.uk for more information and to register your electrical products.
Frequently Recalled Products
The electrical items that most often get reported as faulty or dangerous include:
Electrical chargers
Adaptors, including those used for travel
Extension and spare product leads
Hairdryers, tongs and straighteners
Small kitchen appliances such as kettles, toasters and irons
Checking your electrical products
The Electrical Safety First charity produced a product checker which contains the details of electrical products that have been recalled since 2007. We have installed this onto our Product Recall page. If you have searched for a product that you own and it is not listed, this means that it has not been recalled and should be safe to use. However, if you do have concerns about its safety, contact the retailer or manufacturer to alert them to a potential problem.
